Why Nana Asamani Couldn’t Grant Ghana Independence

To be able to excel in feats you seek, you need to be resilient, selfless and determined.

Most people in the world today would have been given wider recognition but since they allowed the love of money and fame to override their reasoning, oblivion has been their reward.

Although the modern Ghanaian owe independence to the legendary Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, there were other able-bodied men who could have won the battle for Ghana.

Nana Asamani, one of Akwamu’s heroes, would have had the chance to rescue Ghana out of the clutches of the slave masters but he fumbled massively.

It is believed that he and his people tricked the Dutch into surrendering their castles to them, by asking the leader to test the gun powder.

There was an argument and resistance between Asamani and the Dutch team until the leader agreed to do the testing.

After the guns got into the custody of Asamani, he held the Dutch hostage, together with his entourage, and took over the castle, but, for a short while.

According to Ghanaian history, Asamani sold the castle back to Dutch under a new leadership in exchange for a huge sum of money.

Irrespective of such a scrupulous dealing, the Akwamu tribe still hold Nana Asamani in high esteem.

There is an embellished statue of the legend holding castle keys and a gun in front of Adome Bridge, within the Accra-Ho road.

Nana Asamani played his part well but could not reach the finish line, and rather paved way for Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to complete the bid.
